Incandescent lamps [light bulbs]

As most of you must have heard by now, ordinary general lighting service [GLS] incandescent lamps [light bulbs] are gradually to be phased out over the coming years.

Some of the higher wattage GLS lamps [150 & 200 watt] have already been withdrawn and more lamps, including 100 watt GLS lamps & pearl lamps of any wattage, are due to be withdrawn at the begining of September this year [2009]. Thus, although it will be legal to sell off existing stocks, many standard household lamps will quickly become unavailable. In fact many supermarkets & diy stores have already stopped selling them.

At Kaylex Electrical, we still have many of the soon-to-be-discontinued lamps in stock, including 200 watt, 150 watt, 100 watt, 60 watt & 40 watt pearl & clear GLS lamps as well as opal candle & small round [golf ball] lamps which we will continue to sell until stocks are exhausted.

We will, of course, continue to stock & sell those lamps that are legally available, including many types of clear lamps, reflector spot lamps, low voltage & mains voltage halogen spot lamps, halogen floodlight lamps, PAR38 garden spotlamps, 221mm & 284mm striplamps, rough service lamps, oven lamps, cooker hood lamps, refrigerator lamps, crown silver lamps etc. etc. etc.

Because of the demise of GLS lamps there is a huge incentive for lamp manufacturers to provide energy saving replacements & development of alternative light sources is progressing rapidly with better & more acceptable lamps becoming available all the time.

For this reason it is impossible to predict what might be available at any given time & it would probably be a mistake to assume that the only alternative is the much despised compact fluorescent lamp [CFL], although the light quality, appearance & output of these lamps has improved considerably & goverment subsidies & mass production has brought prices down.

Other types of replacement lamps are already available, including halogen versions of GLS, candle & reflector lamps which save approximately 30% energy for the same high quality light output & the development of all types of LED [light emitting diode] lamps, which can save up to 90% running costs, is progressing rapidly and the quality & colour of the light they produce is continuously improving.
